Drive In, Drive Out
I took my first solo car trip with Maddie today. This probably doesn't sound like a big deal to you surburban folk, but I don't drive that often. In fact, I can't remember the last time I drove the car -- it got tough getting behind the wheel when I was hugely pregnant. For the most part I get around by foot or subway. Maddie actually likes the subway quite a bit. I usually take her in the sling, because it's easier than lugging the stroller up and down the stairs. But in either case she just falls asleep, although sometimes she looks around for awhile.
Anyway, our big car trip took us to Target and Babies R Us and lunch at McDonald's. Actually, Maddie had her lunch at Babies R Us. Their mother's room really makes breastfeeding on the go a little easier. Being the smart mommy that I am I changed her first. This was my first public restroom diaper change. Their changing station is a little on the high side for someone petite like me so it was a bit awkward. Then, Maddie decided this would be a good time to pee all over herself. Luckily I had a change of clothes, but Maddie wasn't happy. She doesn't like getting naked on her cushy changing table in her warm room. She really didn't like getting naked on a hard, cold changing station in a cold bathroom. And naked was necessary -- she soaked through the onesie and the outer outfit.
Despite this small mishap the overall outing was a success. And, actually, I might say the outing was a success because of the mishap. All the things you worry about happening are much less of a big deal when they actually happen, right?
