Welcome to How We Do It!
Looking for a job is one of the world’s hardest jobs and it can be a very lonely one. Building a great career while also having a great personal life is also hard and often isolating. (If you’ve ever wondered “Does everyone have this figured out but me?” you know what I mean.)
Finding community online isn’t easy. LinkedIn can be depressing when you are job seeking (and the groups function has never been great). Facebook is … Facebook. (There are some really great groups on Facebook. I just don’t like spending time there.) And we all really need to stop scrolling X.com.
I’m building “How We Do It” to be an interactive space for people looking for jobs, but also for anyone trying to have a great career and a rich personal life, too.
Who is this community for?
It’s for YOU! Certainly, this is a space for people whose main job is finding a job – whether you have been unemployed for just a few months or have been out of work for years.
But it’s also for people who are currently working. Maybe you are looking for a new role or hoping to get promoted. Or maybe you recently landed a new role or you are hiring on your team. You belong here, too! Share your wisdom! What worked for you? What have you seen work for others? What makes candidates stand out when you are hiring?
As I’ve learned, today’s hiring manager is tomorrow’s job seeker and vice versa. We can work together, and support each other, to climb to new career heights.
Is this community only for women?
No. I have been an advocate for women and for gender equity for many years. I’ve also met many great men who support equity. And finding a job, managing a career and having a great life is hard for everyone! I do have a point of view and often write about domestic inequality, the state of American motherhood, women’s workforce participation, and the childcare crisis, so you may want to check out some of those posts so you know what you are signing up for! Of course I have a variety of other interests including food, marketing and communications, politics, books, working in tech, South Shore style pizza, The Marvel Cinematic Universe, podcasts, and the NYC public school system.
Why Should I Pay?
People value what they pay for, and my hope is that paying subscribers will be more likely to read and contribute to the community. Paid subscribers will get exclusive access to posts that include insights from me and other experts, including job search tools that I’ve found and developed to help in my search. I’m also planning to host some Threads, Chats and moderate discussions in the comments. I may eventually add subscriber-only Zoom chats, too. Not all posts will be paid-only, so if you are just a casual reader and want to stay on the free plan, that’s great.
I understand that not everyone can afford to pay. If you want to be part of the community but you are unemployed or underemployed and your household income can’t handle another expense, just email me. You don’t have to tell me your story or make a case. Just ask.
On the other hand, if you have the means to fund an additional subscription — or to gift one to someone in your life — you can do that, too. To donate a subscription, click here. To give it to someone in your life, click here. And you can check out group subscriptions here.
This is an experiment so I’m looking forward to hearing your feedback. You can email me at tamimforman@gmail.com.
